COVID-19 has brought with it not only challenges to health and economic safety across the world but for equitable education provision and education leadership at all levels.

Leaders have had to speedily re-organize the ways in which they make sense of and operationalize their leading philosophies and practices in order to support the continuing education for learners and the development of teachers.

For many, online teaching with all its attending vagaries has been a new experience, but they have had to put the necessary systems in place to make it a reality. This involved; determinations of how to provide for students and teachers in disparate socio-economic circumstances, how to offer psycho-social first aid, the procurement of devices and relevant technologies, training for teachers and students, sensitization for parents, the development of relevant policies and procedures and supporting staff with adopting and implementing national COVID-19 guidelines for school re-opening.

These demands have placed tremendous pressure on educational leaders across the spectrum. This forum provides an opportunity for education leaders to have a conversation about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic – their successes, their challenges, their recommendations for moving forward, and the opportunities that this COVID-19 pandemic provides for their growth and development.

The forum is designed to:

  • Connect school leaders in peer groups so that they can rapidly share best practices;
  • Highlight the nontechnical factors influencing leadership decision making on the way forward through and beyond the crisis;
  • Articulate the nature of support leaders need in their unexpected and evolving roles and the role of teachers’ colleges in providing this support; and,
  • Support with defining the role of school leaders in a crisis response, focusing on issues such as student well-being, teacher support, instructional leadership and online teaching and finances.
