Webinar
COVID-19 and responses to the outbreak are greatly impacting migrant communities in Europe.
Several worrying trends in the health, (economic) safety and rights of individuals are unfolding. In this webinar, we will look at how some challenges might actually be treated as opportunities to promote a more human rights-centered approach to migration in Europe.
Join to learn about these alternatives and find out why there is momentum to engage with the following topics:
- Alternatives to detention: Many migrants have been released from immigration detention due to temporary suspension of deportations and also on public health grounds. Accompanied by public and political pressure for release, this opens further space for discussions on non-custodial alternative approaches such as case management.
- Workers’ rights and regularisation: The restricted availability of migrant workers to support essential infrastructure in EU member states has increased awareness of their important contribution as key workers. This has opened doors to discussing migrant worker rights, recognition of qualifications, and regularisation.
- Migrant leadership and inclusive societies: Migrants have been at the forefront of the response to the health crisis and have been designing responses for their communities. Migrant women are often faced with economic and social exclusion, which has been exacerbated by the crisis. In response, some have organised virtual support systems.
