Webinar
This event is the concluding webinar of a series focusing on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (WEF). These webinars aimed at providing a throughout understanding of why implementing the WEF is essential for human well-being, poverty alleviation, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The interlinkages between the water, energy, and food supply systems – the nexus – is a major consideration in countries’ sustainable development strategies. Rapid economic growth, expanding populations, and increasing prosperity are driving up demand for energy, water, and food, especially in developing countries. It is expected that by 2050, the demand for energy will nearly double globally, with water and food demand estimated to increase by over 50%.
At present, the COVID -19 pandemic is also affecting water, food, and energy systems directly through impacts on water, food, and energy supply and demand, and indirectly by affecting the purchasing power and the capacity to produce and distribute irrigated water, food, and energy. As a result, these trends will strongly affect sustainable development especially in regard to the WEF nexus amongst the less developed nations. These unprecedented challenges urgently require integrated and innovative solutions and business models.
The webinar aims to together policymakers, technical experts, technology providers, the private and public sectors, representatives from the world of finance, and development partners who have been involved in the water, food, and energy industry.
