Virtual meeting
The international group of 24 experts which was appointed by UNESCO to produce a draft text for a Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence will meet for the second time from 31 August to 4 September to revise its first draft text in light of the extensive comments, impressions, and inputs collected during a wide multi-stakeholder consultation process.
A first draft of the Recommendation was produced by the Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG) during its first virtual meeting in April 2020. It was then subjected to an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process involving all regions of UNESCO, which included a public online consultation, regional and sub-regional virtual consultations as well as workshops conducted by partners. The purpose of these consultations from the end of June to the beginning of August 2020 was to ensure that all stakeholders could provide feedbacks on the development of this first global standard-setting instrument, in order to make it as inclusive as possible.
In this second meeting that will mainly be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AHEG will review the results of these consultations with the ambitious task to reflect the concerns that were raised as accurately as possible in their revision of the first draft of the Recommendation.
The final draft text will be presented to Member States for their comments mid-September 2020. This will mark the start of the intergovernmental phase of the preparation of the Recommendation, before its examination by the General Conference at its 41st session in 2021.
