Gender equality has been the subject of policy debate and public policies. Unfortunately, neither discussion nor action has always been grounded in solid empirical evidence. Part of the general problem in the study of gender gaps is that empirical evidence is limited due to the scarcity of relevant data.
Nevertheless, empirical analyses and new datasets have been slowly emerging over the last decade and provide much-needed insights into the subject.
Most of the empirical studies on gender gaps, however, focus on developed countries and/or address gaps only in a few areas (for instance, gender gaps in education or labor markets). Studies that evaluate gender gaps in developing countries and in other areas relevant for the IDB (e.g., migration, trade, housing, and public transportation, among others) are more limited.
Objective:
This call aims to support research proposals that contribute to the measurement of gender gaps associated with economic opportunities, especially in sectors that are typically neglected, and propose ways of closing those gaps in Southern Cone Countries. The call further aims to fund studies that try to understand how closing gender gaps can boost productivity, growth, and development in these countries.
However, preference will be given to proposals that focus on gender gaps in areas where there is still limited information due to lack of data and/or methodological challenges such as the following:
- Migration
- Trade
- Access to public transportation
- Taxation
- Financial access
- Tourism
