International community urged to support DRC refugees in Angola

The Angolan ambassador, Apolinário Jorge Correia, Permanent Representative of Angola to UN in Geneva, Swiss, on Wednesday appealed to International community to bolster aid for DR Congolese refugees staying in Angola.

According to a press note from the Angolan Permanent Mission that reached Angop on Thursday, the Angolan diplomat said so during the 68th session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva. On the occasion, the ambassador underlined that from USD 65 million requested, 21 million have already been made available, corresponding to 33 percent of what is needed to provide assistance to Congolese refugees in Angola.

He underscored that the amount serves for the creation and accommodation of the refugees in the shelters located in Lóvua municipality in Angola’s eastern Lunda-Norte province.

Apolinário Correia reiterated the Angolan government’s thankfulness for the support that has been provided by the international community through the UNHCR and UN organizations on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers in Angola.

“Despite the economic and financial hardships that Angola has been through, the country did not stop providing emergency and humanitarian assistance to Congolese refugees, having made available arable pot of lands for them to produce food for their self-sufficiency”, he said.

Angola is participating in the meeting in the capacity of State Observer of the Executive Committee with a delegation headed by the ambassador Apolinário Jorge Correia, integrated by experts from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Family and Woman promotion and diplomats of the permanent Mission.
