WFP is co-chairing, together with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), the Logistics Sector in Bangladesh. WFP, as lead agency of the Logistics Cluster, is also coordinating the Logistics Sector in Cox’s Bazar to support the logistics needs of the entire humanitarian community.

Basic services that were available in country prior to the influx of refugees from Myanmar in late August, are under severe strain due to the massive increase in people in the area; the major logistics constraint faced by the humanitarian community is the lack of available storage facilities, which is exacerbated by a lack of suitable land to allow for Mobile Storage Units to be assembled. The Logistics Sector in Bangladesh is supporting the Government-led coordination of the humanitarian logistics response to ensure access to critical logistics services and to support an uninterrupted supply chain and effective response.

The Logistics Sector is setting up a Logistics Hub in a space allocated by the Government in Ukhiya Degree College; 13 MSUs are being erected for a total storage space of 2,184 m², available to the entire humanitarian community on a free-to-user basis.  As of 13 October, eight MSUs are up and ready to receive cargo. Four of these MSUs have been made available to the Government for the storage of humanitarian relief items.

The common storage site in Ukhyia became semi-operational on 5 October. As the land is susceptible to flooding and there is existing standing water that needs drainage, WFP contracted a local construction company to carry out civil groundworks, which started on 3 October and are expected to be completed in the next days.

The Relief Item Tracking Application (RITA) is up and running to track the use of the service in the Ukhiya Logistics Hub. Based on evolving partner requirements, the Logistics Sector Hub will now be available to accommodate requests for storage for a period up to 14 days.
