Dubai has made significant progress on its path towards a sustainable and more environmentally friendly economy, but there is still more work to be done in transforming the emirate into a global capital of green economy, officials at a press conference before the 2017 World Green Economy Summit (WGES) said.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the fourth edition of WGES 2017 is set to be held on October 24-25, under the theme ‘Driving innovation, Leading change’. The event will create synergies across the social, economic and environmental pillars of sustainable development to help achieve the global agenda of green economy set by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The organising committee of the summit announced that they have completed the preparations for holding the summit.
Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, noted that the event represents an ideal platform for business leaders and policymakers in different sectors to organise their visions and ideas to accelerate the transformation of the global economy into a sustainable and low carbon economy that would contribute to achieving sustainable development goals and combating poverty.

Responding to a question posed about the dangerous impact of climate change, Al Zeyoudi noted that climate change is a global phenomenon that affects everyone across the world. He stressed that the effects of climate change were being monitored closely by the authorised parties and that the UAE government was working tirelessly on ensuring that strategies were being put in place to combat the effects. He also stressed that the path towards a greener future was not the responsibility of one organisation, but required a combined contribution of both the public and private sectors.
Al Zeyoudi also noted that since the adoption of the Green Economy approach under The UAE Green Growth Strategy2012, the UAE has made significant progress towards achieving its green economy vision. This is best reflected by the growing and widespread interest of the public and private sectors in this strategy, including the finance and investment sectors and the academic community.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and MD and CEO of Dewa, said that the summit this year will highlight three key pillars of the green economy including innovation & technology, finance & investment, and leadership & policy.
“These will integrate improvements in resource efficiency to create synergies across the social, economic and environmental pillars of sustainable development,” he said.
“While it will contribute to design new green economy strategies, WGES 2017 will oversee wide participation of decision makers, which will make it a global strategic platform to further increase the momentum and help achieve the global agenda of green economy.”
