Description

Location: Melbourne, VIC

Client: Australian Pacific Airports (Melbourne) Pty Ltd

Description:

In May 2005, Melbourne became the first airport in Australia with the facilities to land an A380 Airbus. John Holland delivered this project under budget and ahead of schedule.

The scope of works included widening the main 3.7 kilometre long runway by 15 metres (7.5 metres either side), upgrading the entire runway lighting and guiding system, replacing 60 distressed runway slabs and installing a series of stormwater and drainage systems. The major challenge was to complete works while the airport remained operational, within a maximum construction period of just six weeks.

A world first, no other international airport with a single major runway had ever decommissioned its main runway for upgrading works. John Holland’s innovation, expertise and absolute commitment to minute by minute planning, hourly and daily monitoring and immediate correction of issues ensured this $27million project was delivered under budget and two weeks ahead of schedule, resulting in a quick return to service of the main runway with minimal disruption to passenger and freight movements.
