Summary
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Human Rights Policy and Practice (EMHRPP) is an innovative, integrated, and interdisciplinary postgraduate programme. It provides excellent educational training and professional competences to those intending to work and those already working in the field of human rights. The proposed programme actively responds to the changing needs of students and the job market through a more cohesive curriculum structure guided by four central strands, which are highly pertinent to study and work in the field of human rights. These strands: human rights theory; research; practice and professionalisation, offer a uniquely joint approach to teaching and learning human rights, contributing to the development of the field of study and attractiveness of European education. The EMHRPP contributes also to the strenghtning of the European values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law and to the fulfilment of European committments in the area of Human Rights Education. Students will earn 120 ECTS during the 24-month programme leading to a Joint Master’s Degree administered by the University of Gothenburg. The main academic subjects are human rights theory, human rights in the context of politics and the market economy, research methods and methodologies, human rights defenders, and social movements and NGOs. Starting with the Induction Week and the Academic Induction Seminars at the University of Gothenburg, all students will complete the same compulsory mobility path across the three Consortium Partner universities (Gothenburg, Bilbao and London) for the first three semesters. Teaching modules will be complemented with a Professional Seminar Series, field visits and a placement (internship) during the third semester with an organisation working in human rights in London. During the fourth semester, students are required to write a dissertation, supervised by academic staff from the three Partner universities. Students, academic and administrative staff will reunite for the Student Symposium in June each year, where dissertations are publicly presented and discussed. The programme is delivered by the University of Gothenburg (Lead Partner), Sweden, the University of Roehampton, London, UK, and University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain, in collaboration with Associated Partner organisations working in the field of human rights. The Associated Partners include: City of Gothenburg, Sweden; CSR Sweden, Stockholm; International Institute for the Sociology of Law (ISSJ), Oñati, Spain; the International Refugee Rights Initiative (IRRI), Kampala, Uganda; Protection International (AISBL), Bruxelles, Belgium; CEAR-Euskadi, Bilbao, Spain; and Region Västra Götaland, Gothenburg, Sweden. The EMHRPP Consortium builds on more than ten years experience and a close academic and administrative relationship, which ensures that the programme operates in a genuinely joint manner and that students feel supported throughout their experience.
