Description

The Africa Schools Kenya programme is an initiative of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) through the Private Enterprise Partnership for Africa (PEP Africa) programme. It was introduced in Kenya in 2007 and over 600 schools (approximately 2,000 participants) have benefited from it. Of these, 144 received business plan support and of these, 86 received financing. The purpose of the end-of-programme evaluation was to inform PEP Africa Management of the outcomes and impacts of the programme's implementation and delivery, and provide learning to guide future replications. The evaluation addressed the programme's relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, sustainability and alternatives / improvements.

EfC, together with local partner, MICRODE Consult, collected and analysed data from all schools financing, business plan and financial management support. The analysis was conducted through document review, interviews with key stakeholders, school questionnaires and case studies. Local enumerators administered questionnaires to school managers and head teachers. In-depth, qualitative data was obtained through case studies in 10 schools and provided a clearer picture of the intended and unintended impacts and outcomes of the programme from the schools' perspective.
