Description: Ethiopia, Madagascar Animal Protein Productivity Strategy
The consultant should be able at short notice to deploy the right set of skills and work with our clients providing support in following areas:
Provide clients with technical advice including detailed cost benefit analysis when needed and technological options on the establishment, operations, and the expected performance of feeling operations for cattle and small ruminants in Madagascar and Ethiopia
- Provide clients with technical advice including detailed cost benefit analysis when needed and technological options on the establishment, operations, and the expected performance of abattoir facilities able to get accreditation for export operations
- Help Clients contract local engineering company to prepare technical and construction
- documentation for the slaughterhouse and feedlot, facilitate with advice the relevant approvals, and advise on the selection of construction materials. This will include:
a. Work with local engineering companies to prepares technical drawings of all major structures
b. Work with engineering and construction companies on selection of construction materials, including roofing cover, pen surfaces, feed roads and cattle lanes, feedlot pens and fencing, design of feed bunks and water troughs.
c. Provide advice on the purchase of the equipment needed for feed preparation - tractors, tractor driven feed mixer wagons, forage chopper, and machine for chopping cassava and sweet potato tubers.
- Provide technical advice and facilitate procurement of the slaughterhouse and feedlot equipment.
- Provide technical advice and supervise the construction of the slaughterhouse and supporting infrastructure such as access roads, water supply and electricity supply. Supervise construction of residential buildings and offices for staff. Monitor cost overrun.
- Provide technical advice and supervise the construction of commodity warehouse and silage bunkers, including concrete drying pads for sweet potato and cassava tubers.
- Advise on best feeding formula for feedloting operations based on the availability and cost of local feed supplies
- Provide technical advise on crop production, yields, and technologies available and adapted to local conditions in Madagascar and Ethiopia
- Advise on out-grower opportunities and practical ways to set up them with farmers in both Madagascar and Ethiopia
- Provide guidance to client to establish feed supply chain to grow or procure feed commodities needed to satisfy project needs.
- Set up and supervise the establishment of the trial feedlot programs and adjust nutrition rations. Make sure that financial models are adjusted with the results.
- Provide technical advice at design stage and help client design and construct production facilities that meet export requirement;
- Help clients develop feedlot and abattoir Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This will involve full documentation of SOPs and Work Instructions covering all daily aspects of Animal Selection, Health & Welfare, Nutritional Management, together with HACCP and Total Quality Management. Adjust SOP to cultural context and customary rules in Southern Madagascar.
- Assist Clients to meet the requirements of export and quality certifications, including HALAL, HACCP, ISO 9001:2015 (Total Quality Management) and ISO 22005:2007.
- Provide guidance and assistance to Client on establishment of livestock supply chain and out-grower opportunities ad practical options to set them up.
- Support Clients in key staff recruitment and staff training. This will involve advising client on management structure, staffing plan, key competencies, and support in identifying and onboarding key Clients’ staff
- Advise and guide clients on establishing and documenting of Standard Operating Procedures. Provide training and coach Clients’ staff establishing strong management systems
- Provide technical advise on the appropriate KPIs to manage the performance of the feedloting and slaughtering operations, provide appropriate benchmarks and implement the use of the KPIs by the clients
- Provide technical advise on appropriate ERM systems and its implementation to improve operations management based on good quality data and KPIs
- Support the Clients once facilities are in operation to improving efficiency of processing facilities
- Support clients with the upgrade of existing abattoir facilities including complete technical revision of existing processing and refrigeration facilities and packaging facilities,
- For equipment upgrades support Clients as needed with equipment installation and set-up.
- Support Clients on positioning product on key markets and provide timely market information with a special emphasis on market insights on GCC markets. Where needed support Clients in establishing of new sales channels on GCC markets
