Project description
GPU-driven simulation software saves industrial design costs
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is an estimated EUR 1.7 billion market used across multiple industries to optimise aerodynamics, design cooling systems and detect design errors during prototyping. However, current CFD software requires powerful supercomputers, and the use of wind tunnels for testing is expensive. The EU-funded Pacefish CFD software uses modern graphics processing units (GPUs) to make CFD simulations cheaper and more accessible, with results at Volkswagen comparable to real-life wind tunnel testing at 1 % of the cost. Pacefish customers can save EUR 600 000 in a 5-year period compared to conventional CFD solutions, by reducing hardware, personnel and runtime costs.
Objective
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is used to simulate the flow of liquid and gases around objects for optimization of aerodynamic properties, design of cooling systems, and for detecting errors in design before proceeding to production. These software packages require very powerful and expensive supercomputers. A single simulation could take days to finish and as such, simulation throughput is limited while costs are high.
Pacefish is a revolutionary CFD software which is tailored to the massively-parallel architecture of graphics processing units (GPUs), resulting in 20 times improvement in performance. By using a smart numerical model (LBM), setting-up and running simulations is a simple task and the manual work for the user only takes 5 minutes.
In a joint benchmark with Volkswagen on the VW Golf geometry, Pacefish results are remarkably close to real life wind tunnel experiments. Pacefish runtime performance is better compared with other GPU-accelerated CFD software.
The global CFD market was estimated at $1.2 billion in 2014 and is likely to reach $1.86 billion by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 13.6% .
Pacefish presents a new opportunity for improvement and optimization during early design phases. CFD simulations with Pacefish are 100 times cheaper than wind tunnel experiments while results are remarkably close.
Pacefish Customers can save €600K in a 5-year period compared to conventional CFD solutions, by reducing hardware, personnel and runtime costs.
Pacefish started as a spin-off of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Numeric Systems GMBH was founded in 2016 by Eugen Riegel the inventor and the main developer of Pacefish. SimScale became our partner in January 2018, Pacefish is integrated within their cloud services.
