Description

The activity involved the comprehensive revision of proposals for the Master Plan for Erbil Citadel and the preparation of proposals for a US$ 6 million rehabilitation plan, including:

Design of outline proposals for the reconstruction of houses in the central area and the city gate, demolished by the Saddam Hussein regime, including methodologies for recovery of the urban form without the loss of authenticity;
Preparation of proposals for the conservation of decayed historic houses;
Designation of the core area, buffer zone and planning protection zones in preparation for a possible World Heritage nomination.

• Development of urban planning policies with regard to definition of zoning regulations for building heights, etc., to retain the dominance of the Citadel on its ancient tell over the modern, expanding, city.

• Preparation of an outline Tourism Development Plan for the Citadel;

• Preparation of proposals for urban renewal following the relocation of refugees from squatter areas within the Citadel;

• Preparation of proposals for the renewal of services.

Liaison with the regional Ministry of Culture and other concerned authorities.
