Objective

To build a strong and visible example of statistical literacy project and to enhance continuity we aim to organise a third edition of the Belgian ESC in 2020-2021. The main objectives of the ESC are: 1. to promote curiosity and interest in statistics among students, 2. to encourage teachers to use new materials and real data provided by official statistics, 3. to show the role of statistics in various aspects of society, 4. to promote teamwork and collaboration among students. These objectives are applicable on the organisation of the Belgian ESC. Yet they also correspond with Statistics Belgium’s efforts and initiatives in the field of statistical literacy. The first steps in this field were made in 2018 and continued in 2019. Currently, projects for 2020 and 2021 are being developed. With the ESC, we hope to address secondary school students and their teachers, while in other initiatives (e.g. Statbel Junior) we address other groups (e.g. primary school students).
