Civic Education for democratic citizenship-empowerment of Civic Education in public schools of Georgia

Project details:

The overall objective is to strengthening the role of civil society in promoting active citizenship, civic participation and representation, thereby contributing to peaceful conciliation of group interests.
Specific objective: To enable teachers from disadvantaged regions in Georgia to prepare their students to better and actively carry out their roles as citizens.

Results:
Result 1: Permanent network of education professionals/teachers is established that advocates role of civic education for active citizenship;
Result 2: Methodology guidelines of teaching civic education are developed in the framework of the project, used by the Ministry of Education and Science as standard tool for teaching civic education in public schools of Georgia;
Result 3: Pedagogical and curricular strategies are developed supporting empowerment of democratic citizenship in education.

Target Groups:

Education professionals/teachers, school teachers (from Samtskhe-Javakheti, Shida Kartli, Kvemo Karti, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Imereti, Ajara, Kakheti), policy makers from government as well as parliament of Georgia.

Activities:

• Needs assessment in cooperation with local experts and civic education experts from Germany;
• Capacity building trainings for education professionals/teachers (Training of Trainers);
• Training of teachers from different minority and rural areas of Georgia;
• Development and publication of standard guidelines for teaching civic education in public schools of Georgia;
• Standard guidelines are discussed with policy makers and adopted by the Ministry of Education and Science;
• Workshops with Stakeholders and decision-makers for pedagogical and curricular strategy building supporting development of democratic citizenship.
