Objective: The European Commission has promoted a program for the deployment of the ERTMS/ETCS (European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System) along the railway Trans-European transport network, as foreseen by Regulation UE n.1315/2013. In this scenario and in order to harmonize signalling systems, Mercitalia Rail (MIR), Rail Freight Operator, is equipping its fleet with interoperable ERTMS/ETCS baseline 3 on on-board units to prevent the technological bottleneck of being unable to run on ERTMS equipped lines. The Action covers 40 locomotives type TRAXX E.494 (produced by Bombardier), including 1 prototype. The vehicles run today on the national network and on the Italian parts of 4 European Core Network Corridors as well as of 4 Rail Freight Corridors, and namely: 1) Rhine Alpine (RFC1) 2) Scandinavian-Mediterranean (RFC3) 3) Mediterranean (RFC6) 4) Baltic-Adriatic (RFC5)
