Salient Characteristics:
Scientists and personnel at the US Dairy Forage Research Center have identified the need for a solar-powered weather station that is specifically designed for monitoring field-weather conditions as well as wireless sensors for monitoring soil conditions. The weather station must also have all components necessary for measuring rainfall, relative humidity, air temperature, wind speed and direction, and include wireless soil moisture and temperature sensors for 36 field plots.
1. General
- Vendor must demonstrate prior experience with manufacturing a solar-powered weather station that meets specifications described below and demonstrate that the weather station has been successfully used for agricultural monitoring and is durable and reliable in the field.
2. Solar-powered weather station for monitoring field conditions
- The weather station must provide continuous logging for outdoor environments and contain wireless sensor motes as well as five smart sensors
- Logged data from the weather station must be transferred at regular connection intervals to a web-based software that can be accessed by computer or mobile device
- The weather station must have a built-in LCD screen to check the current station status and make adjustments onsite
- The weather station must have a built-in solar panel and rechargeable NiMH battery pack for its power source
- The weather station must include a 4G basic service plan for logging up to 20 sensors every minute
- The weather station shall include a rain gauge sensor measuring rainfall up to 5 inches per hour with a resolution of
0.01 inch, and 1% accuracy rates up to 1"/hour. It must also include a 2m cable.
- The weather station will include a sensor for measuring dew point, relative humidity, and air temperature.
- The weather station must have a solar radiation shield for improved temperature measurement accuracy.
- The weather station will include two soil moisture probes measuring 10cm in length and one 12-bit temperature sensor with a 6 meter cable.
- The weather station must include 36 wireless sensors, each of which measures soil moisture, soil temperature, and electrical conductivity. These sensors must be durable and able to stay in the soil for extended periods of time.
- The weather station must come with a 3-meter tripod kit for mounting the weather station and include a full cross arm to assure unobstructed wind measurements.
- The station must also come with 36 Bluetooth pendants for measuring temperature and light and which deliver data directly to mobile devices.
