Dansk Solenergi RI/Danish Solar Energy has updated the power system at the lighthouse at Hjelm island. The lighthouse has an interesting history.
From a petrol driven system to a photovoltaic driven system that will reduce the CO2 with 21 tons / year.
The Lighthouse
In 1856 the state built the lighthouse. The lighthouse is designed by architect N. S. Nebelong, who also designed the nearby lighthouse Vesborg Fyr (Samsoe) and Sejroe, as well as Skagen Fyr, Roesnaes Fyr, Hesseloe Fyr, Romsoe Fyr and Hirtshals Fyr. Ferdinand Meldahl was responsible for the construction work. He later became the head of Academy of Art in Copenhagen and constructed Marmorkirken in Copenhagen. King Frederik XII's monogram is over the door to the Lighthouse. The lighthouse was operated by three families, a principal, a keeper and an assistant. The lighthouse was manned until February 1970, when it was changed into automatic operation. Today it is remote controlled from Fornaes Fyr at Grenaa. The ray of light is at 61 meters above sea level and is one of the highest elevated lighthouses in Denmark. The light is on for 4 seconds, then dark for 4 seconds etc. The lighthouse was careful renovated in 2000.
A fantastic view
From the top of the lighthouse there is a fantastic view. To the north Jernhatten, which of name and shape is like Hjelm. The village of Elsegaarde can clearly be seen to the Northwest and in good weather also housing complexes, chimneys and the Soesterhoej radio mast in Aarhus can be seen. Helgenaes, Sletterhage Lighthouse, Tunoe, Samsoe and Vejroe can be seen in clear weather. In particularly clear weather and with a good set of binoculars one can see the Asnaes Power Plant in Kalundborg, Sejroe, Odden ferry harbour and Sjaellands Odde Lighthouse. The ferries from Mols-Linie are a part of the view to the south and west.
