Type of action: SMP European Statistics

Project ID: 101118732

Objective: Transport is an important sector of the EU economy and plays a vital role in today’s mobile society. Eurostat’s statistics in this field describe the most important features of transport, namely the quantities of freight and numbers of passengers transported each year, the number of vehicles and infrastructure used, and the contribution of transport services to the economy as a whole. The European Green Deal, one of the six priorities of the Commission for the period 2019-2024, is a growth strategy to make the EU’s economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and by making this transition just and inclusive for all. The European Green Deal has a strong focus on the shift towards a sustainable and smart mobility, calling for a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050. To support the transition to cleaner, greener, and smarter mobility, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, the Commission has adopted several proposals that will modernise EU’s transport system: to increase transport mode connectivity and shift more passengers and freight to rail and inland waterways; to support the roll-out of charging points and of alternative refuelling infrastructure; to support new digital technologies; to place a stronger focus on sustainable urban mobility; and to make it easier to choose different transport options in an efficient multimodal transport system. To underpin the implementation of these proposals and monitor progress on achieving targets, new transport statistics are necessary.
