Objective:
The ABR team aims to redefine community building through a sustainable lens using the platform of the AfroBanana Festival, intertwining creative expression, environmental consciousness, and transnational collaboration. As the festival approaches its 12th edition, the focus is not just on celebrating the arts but on evolving into a year-round platform that actively engages and influences communities, embedding its best practices for a sustainable future. This concept envisions community building methodologies that transcend the festival, creating a network of interconnected events and initiatives with a transnational dimension that give back to the community at the same time. Specifically: Audience Engagement Strategies through a year- round engagement plan with small events & community activations in partner countries, fostering continuous connections and narrative-building and generating an Alternative News Creative Platform leading to the festival (WP3) Creative Expression - Plug-in Projects: Reframing the community typology through research and engaging local and international initiatives within the platform of the Festival (WP4) Networking & Policy-making: Create a network of community festival worldwide to ensure collectiveness, resilience and support in innovative and policy altering endeavours (WP5) These actions will be the continuation of AfroBanana Festival’s ongoing cultural evolution and adaptation for survival of the environmental challenges. Achieving this evolution involves transferring, transforming, innovating, and embracing open-mindedness. Transferring the typology to different contexts spatially and temporally. Ongoing sustainable transformation. New survival methodologies and innovative ideas addressing a harsh and sinking creative sector. Open-mindedness towards new approaches, understanding, inclusion, and audience accessibility, considering their backgrounds, and a human-centric design approach.
