Description

Project Name: Capacity Building in International Public Law at UNPAD

Project Number: NICHE-IDN-227

Requesting Organisation: Padjadjaran University

Project description: As a member of ASEAN, Indonesia supports the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which aims to achieve full regional economic integration by 2020.

The AEC, which includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma/Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, will be a very competitive single market and production base.

Indonesia has a key role to play in the AEC, being one its largest economies, and this requires a stable political and economic climate. There is, however, an acute shortage of public and private sector lawyers with a good knowledge of international law.

Education in international law in Indonesia is still in its infancy and needs further development. The International Law Department of Universitas Padjajaran is an important provider in this field of expertise. The project will focus on improving the Department's organisational, management and academic capability to produce well-trained lawyers in public international law and conduct applied research to prepare Indonesia for ASEAN accession.

In addition, the project will enable UNPAD to actively promote public international law among university, public sector and other stakeholders to prepare Indonesia for the ASEAN Economic Community.
