About

MISSION
The SHI Stein-Hardenberg Institute  researches, develops and advises  on the modern administration and transformation of state structures and processes, especially against the background of digitization. This increases the complexity of public service delivery to such an extent that application-oriented research is required more than ever before . We make our knowledge available to practice and open up creative freedom. To this end, we support critical but constructively necessary change processes, introduce methodological competence, develop action concepts and support their implementation.

ACTION
In his research, the SHI applies classical quantitative and qualitative methods, design research approaches such as the design thinking approach, the scenario method and action design research. The SHI team pursues an interdisciplinary approach, combining administrative, political, legal and computer science. At the same time, we use our research results to develop tools and methods that make "clotted" research knowledge practical and support research-based transformation and innovation.

MISSION
As SHI we have dedicated ourselves to the thoughts and actions of our namesake Baron vom Stein and Prince von Hardenberg. Von Stein and Hardenberg have not only laid the foundations for a modern state organization, but have also fundamentally modernized other areas (such as the introduction of general compulsory education). They have managed to combine their theoretical reflections with practice and also to pursue unconventional ideas. Digitization, in particular, requires a thorough reflection on state-organizational principles such as state tasks and their legitimacy.
