In 1999, smart technologies GmbH (short name smart tech) was founded by SIEMENS AG Austria (74%) and Tengg and Partner GmbH (26%). Dipl. Ing. Hansjörg Tengg, a manager with many years of experience in the energy industry, became managing director and a core team of experienced developers and project managers from the SIEMENS energy division moved to smart tech.

The company goal of smart tech was defined as the development of comprehensive IT solutions for the liberalized energy markets.

In the first few years, smart tech concentrated primarily on helping to shape the liberalization of the Austrian energy markets for electricity and gas.

For this purpose, between 2000 and 2003, “special purpose companies” for determining and billing balancing energy in the electricity and gas markets (APCS and AGCS) and the spot market electricity exchange EXAA (see investments) were set up together with the companies in the Austrian energy industry. The IT solutions for these companies were developed and operated to this day.

Smart technologies took over all shares of Austrian Power Grid and Cismo in Riecado retroactively as of January 1, 2012 and is now 100% owner.

With this new shareholder structure, smart tech has even stronger access to international markets in addition to its strong roots in the national Austrian energy industry with the IT group ATOS, which has 75,000 employees worldwide, as well as its continued close cooperation with the SIEMENS EM division.
