About
GVC has been operating in Nicaragua since 1984 (although we have been in the country since 1978), encouraging local empowerment in order to contribute to sustainable, inclusive and active human and socio-cultural development. We use participation-based intervention methods, which are devised and implemented together with the beneficiaries and communities receiving the aid. We involve all the players, including local institutions and civil society organisations, especially supporting the participation and inclusion of the most vulnerable groups. Within this framework, GVC fosters the active engagement of local partners, embedded in the local context, to pinpoint, as a team, the problems and necessities, the beneficiaries and stakeholders to involve, and the actions and methodologies to draw on. GVC has worked in the country in different sectors since the outset, consolidating its contribution to human rights, food security and rural development, environment protection, WASH, gender fairness and emergency action. Due to its geography, poverty level and high exposition to tropical storms, Nicaragua remains extremely vulnerable when dealing with earthquakes, volcano eruptions, flooding, landslides, hurricanes, droughts and tsunamis. To respond to these vulnerabilities, GVC Nicaragua runs projects aimed to reduce the risk of disasters caused by climate change, through the development of processes to plan and implement risk management.
GVC is a non-governmental, secular and independent organisation founded in Bologna (Italy) in 1971. We have been active all over the world for more than 40 years and we are currently present in 26 countries.
