The ILS - Institute for State and Urban Development Research is a non-university urban research institute that compares the dynamics and diversity of urban change internationally. The goal of our application-oriented basic research is a better understanding of recent urbanization processes in order to develop interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge in an active dialogue with practice, politics and society for a socially, ecologically and economically sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces on different spatial scales.

The ILS is a founding member of the Johannes Rau research community . We are actively involved in the spatial science 5R network as well as other regional, national and international cooperations and networks and see ourselves as an important hub of spatial science research in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and Europe.

The ILS is based in Dortmund. It has the legal form of a non-profit GmbH. The State of NRW is a partner.
