About
The Santa Cecilia State Conservatory of Rome is a state body and is part of the set of institutions that make up the network of Higher Education in Art and Music (AFAM) prepared by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) . The training courses offered by the Conservatory are similar to those of the university and are divided into a three-year course and a two-year specialist course. At the end of the courses, the first and second level diplomas are awarded respectively, which are equivalent in all respects to the corresponding university degrees.
The institution is now 130 years old. Its historical and cultural roots date back to the ancient Vertuosa company of musicians then Congregation of Musicians of Rome under the invocation of S. Cecilia (1565), which later became the National Academy of Santa Cecilia. At the beginning of the 19th century, the need arose to create a music school within the institution. The birth of the first nucleus of the school is due to Giovanni Sgambati, pianist and composer of international fame. But it was only on May 23, 1870 that the official opening of the musical institute was decreed. In 1911 the Liceo Musicale became an autonomous moral body and in 1919 it became a state, separating itself definitively from the Academy. Only later did it assume the current name of Conservatory of Music Santa Cecilia.
