About

Kemerovo State University was founded in 1974. The University has gone through several stages of its development from a small provincial Pedagogical College to one of the largest universities in Siberia.

Kemerovo State University traces its history back to the Pedagogical College (later renamed the pedagogical College), organized in 1928 to train primary school teachers and pioneer counselors. In 1949, Kemerovo Teachers’ Institute was opened on the base of the College, and in 1953, it received the status of the Kemerovo State Pedagogical Institute. In 1974, the Pedagogical Institute was reorganized into Kemerovo State University University.

KemSU has always been the largest HEI in Kuzbass, and in 2017 it earned the title of flagship university of Kemerovo region. In 2018, KemSU ranked among the TOP-10 flagship universities of Russia.

In the independent ratings developed by both Russian and international organizations, KemSU traditionally ranks among the TOP-100 most popular Russian universities. The university ranks high in the Academic Ranking of World Universities-European Standard (ARES).

KemSU possesses modern research and educational laboratories and has over 20 research schools. The university’s research projects have received grant support from Russian and international foundations.

KemSU organizes internships and facilitates job placement at the leading companies and enterprises in Russia and abroad.

KemSU has the experience of training students from all over the world: within degree programs, exchange programs, courses of Russian as foreign languages and at the preparatory faculty for international applicants. In the academic year 2019/2020, it trains over 900 degree students from 14 countries (Armenia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Viet Nam) and exchange students from Belgium, Italy and Germany.

KemSU has been training foreign students in the Preparatory Department (in Russian as Foreign Language) since 1991. In 2019, students from Guinea, India, Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire, Laos, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Vietnam and China graduated from the Preparatory Department to continue their studies for Degree programs in universities all over Russia. In the academic year 2019/2020, students from Afghanistan, Guinea, Zambia, China, and Mongolia were admitted to the Preparatory Department.
