Description
The Secretariat of the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) is a component of the UN system that runs the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which was founded by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. The CERF represents a humanitarian fund that offers immediate funding to those affected by disasters caused by nature, wars, and other emergencies. Since its establishment in 2006, 126 UN Member States and observers, along with local governments and corporate donors, have enabled humanitarian partners to provide more than $5.5 billion in life-saving aid in over 100 nations and regions.
The CERF Secretariat is responsible for overseeing the management of the fund and ensuring that money is distributed in accordance with stated priorities and regulations. It works closely with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) field offices, UN entities, non-governmental organizations, and other partners to identify and address the most urgent humanitarian needs. The CERF Secretariat is essential in advocating for additional funding for humanitarian efforts as well as for a more efficient and well-coordinated humanitarian response.
