Today it is one of the poorest and most fragile countries in the world. Half of the population lives below the poverty line and an influx of returning refugees contributes to an environment of instability and economic difficulty.

ASI has worked over many years to help Afghanistan with the sustainable management of its natural resources, the development of the private sector, and with structures of government from the central bank and tax systems to reforming the civil service and honing the judiciary.
