About
AHA Rwanda started its operation in 1994 focusing mainly on health and the reconstruction of health infrastructures destroyed during the civil war. AHA’s first intervention took place in two health centers- one to the north- west of Tare in the Kigali prefecture and a second at Kabarondo in Kibungo prefecture to the south- east.
Since 1994, AHA has expanded its operational areas to include Southern, Western, Eastern, and Northern provinces. Currently, AHA works in the three protracted Congolese refugee camps (Kiziba, Kigeme & Mugombwa); two reception centers for new arrivals from Burundi (Bugesera & Nyanza); two transit centers to receive Rwandan returnees (Nkamria &Nyarushishi) and urban refugees in Kigali city and Huye town.
Almost 99% of the population of concern AHA assists are Congolese refugees in the long standing camps of Kiziba or the newly-established camps of Kigeme and Mugombwa.
Throughout, AHA has honed its responses to provide integrated health care which included curative and preventative care, surgical interventions, hospital admissions, referrals, antenatal and post-natal care and immunization. Sanitation, environmental protection and capacity buildings are also done in its operational areas.
In its 25 years journey, AHA was able to provide sustainable health care and significantly improve the lives of the refugees, physical condition of health facilities, restore essential services for refugees/returnees, IDPs, and host communities. AHA has also fostered local participation in the actual restoration of the health unit and rehabilitation/ reconstruction of damaged health infrastructures.
AHA still continues its specialized services that includes health assistance, emergency response and psychosocial trauma management, nutrition, HIV/AIDS and SGBV mitigation, mental health, capacity development, and outreach community service.
