About

The mission of the Geological Survey of Lithuania is to implement state policy in the field of subsoil use, preserving the quality of the geological environment for future generations, and developing the use of geological information.

A brief history of the Geological Survey of Lithuania

The Geological Survey of Lithuania was established on October 16, 1940, although the necessity and prerequisites for establishing a geological survey service had been formed much earlier. From 1941 to 1991, the Geological Survey of Lithuania changed its name, organizational structure, and affiliation several times, but geological survey work was carried out intensively and purposefully.

After the restoration of Lithuania's independence, by a resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and with the approval of the Reconstitutive Seimas of the Supreme Council, on March 11, 1991, the State Geological Service was established instead of the previously existing Geological Works Production Association and the Department of Natural Resources.

The new model  Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGT)  began its activities with 15 full-time positions and functions of regulating the use of subsoil. State geological surveys were carried out by geological companies. Thanks to the activity and initiative of the then director of the service, Gediminas Motuza, and with the kind assistance of the Geological Survey of Norway, the LGT was transformed into a European-style national geological survey service, which, in addition to regulating the use of subsoil, also directly carried out geological surveys necessary for the state and managed the geological information system. This was a rational decision that allowed to accumulate budget funds allocated for state geological surveys and to mobilize professional geologists in one organization.
