Today, Spatial Data Infrastructures can be realized based on a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) using OpenGIS® Web Services. The benefit for provider and user is the interoperability that can be achieved for geodata exchange and service communication, that can be established by specifications of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).

In order to provide important geographic information, relevant security requirements must be met. Two important aspects are secure communication and protected access to services. This, without breaking the interoperability stack, provided by OGC specifications.
