During the second half of the 19th century, animal-pulled trams or buses were the only transport means known. Therefore, there was an important need to create a fast system capable of carrying passengers between the center of the city and the suburbs.
Many European cities, specially London, were concerned about building urban surface and subway rail systems, being the use of steam locomotives the main obstacle, though.
