About

CARE Guatemala officially began its work in 1959, distributing school supplies to more than 20,000 boys and girls, a year after having implemented the pilot School Refreshment Program with milk and oats in 100 schools in the country with its own funds. In 1960, CARE expanded its work area, providing materials for the construction of schools and supporting community groups to improve the health and education conditions of children in rural areas.

Those activities characterized CARE's work for 16 years. Interested in promoting greater benefits to the population, CARE developed projects to provide drinking water and basic sanitation, distribution of supplementary food to lactating women and children, and promoting the use of primary health care services.
