About

The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC), established in its current form in 2005, is the largest association of physicians specialising in anaesthesiology in Europe.

Its stated mission is "to aim for the highest standards of practice and safety in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, intensive care, critical emergency medicine and pain treatment through education, research and professional development throughout Europe." The Society also administers an academic journal, the European Journal of Anaesthesiology (EJA).[3] It was formed in 2005 as the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) to unify the roles of three previous organisations: the European Academy of Anaesthesiology (EAA) dating from 1978, the former European Society of Anaesthesiologists (ESA) established in 1992, and the Confederation of European National Societies of Anaesthesiology (CENSA). The present name was adopted in 2020 to emphasise the organisation's activities in intensive care medicine, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
