About
The Santa Úrsula University (USU) is a Catholic institution founded in Rio de Janeiro, in 1939, by religious from the Roman Union of the Order of Santa Úrsula, created in 1535 by Santa Ângela de Merici. Initially it was called Instituto Santa Úrsula, when its Superior Council decided to create the Institute, whose subtitle was Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Instituto Santa Úrsula, having been recognized by Decree No. 8057 of October 14, 1941.
The project that provided for its creation was presented to Cardinal Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro Dom Sebastião Leme, through Alceu Amoroso Lima, a member of the founding faculty. What was outlined as the objective was to found a Higher Education Institution focused on the cultural formation of the female audience, especially for religious from all over the country so that they could deepen their university studies, in addition to seeking to disseminate Catholic doctrine to the youth.
