About
Mexico has one of the largest and most diverse indigenous populations in Latin America. Although under the Constitution, indigenous peoples in Mexico have the rights to self-determination, the protection of indigenous people's rights varies from state to state. In order to better protect Mexico's indigenous population, in July 2003, the National Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI) was created with the mission to "guide, coordinate, promote, support, foster, monitor, and assess programmes, projects, strategies, and public actions to attain integral and sustainable development and full enjoyment of the rights of indigenous peoples and communities."
CDI has legal personality and its own assets, operating, technical, budgetary and administrative autonomy; its headquarters are in Mexico City.
The CDI governing body is its governing board; it has a Director General to represent its administrative body and an Advisory Council, which provides advice on indigenous peoples’ issues and serves as a liaison with the wider society.
