About
The Central Organization for Radioactive Waste (COVRA) is the only company in the Netherlands with the task of collecting, processing and storing all radioactive waste. All companies in the Netherlands that have a permit under the Nuclear Energy Act to work with radioactive substances are obliged to present their radioactive waste to COVRA. In order to be able to carry out the care task for radioactive waste, COVRA has realized a storage and processing facility in Zeeland, on the Vlissingen-Oost harbor site in the municipality of Borsele.
COVRA needs its expertise for the adequate reception, processing and management of radioactive waste, but COVRA is also happy to make this available externally. COVRA cooperates with stakeholders in the Netherlands and with colleagues in international networks ( IAEA , EC , OECD , NEA ). COVRA participates in international working groups and platforms and shares information on a project basis with sister organizations and research institutes. COVRA is assisting its Spanish colleague ( ENRESA ) in the development of a storage building for highly radioactive waste, comparable to the HABOG. COVRA also supports sister organizations in other countries. For example, COVRA participates in the 'international group of experts', which theDansk Dekommissionering (Denmark) advises on the choice of a long-term strategy for Danish radioactive waste and COVRA participates in the review of the Belgian waste inventory and financial security. Furthermore, COVRA is closely involved in the discussions and activities with a view to possibly realizing regional disposal in Europe and COVRA participates in the European technology platform for research into disposal. ERDO was founded in January 2021, this foundation is located in the COVRA office. ERDO stands for European Repository Development Organisation. Within the association, various European countries are cooperating on a multinational disposal facility for radioactive waste.
