VVOB (Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation.
VVOB has more than 30 years of experience in sustainably improving the quality of education systems. Currently, VVOB implements programmes in Ecuador, Suriname, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Belgium. We also conduct short assignments in other countries.
VVOB focuses on four educational subsectors, identified by SDG4 as specific target areas:
- (i) equitable and quality early childhood education, and the transition of learners to primary education;
- (ii) equitable and quality primary education, leading to relevant learning outcomes;
- (iii) equitable and quality secondary education, leading to relevant learning outcomes;
- (iv) equitable and quality technical and vocational education and training, and the transition of students to the world of work.
Equity, particularly gender equity, and inclusivity in education are at the forefront of VVOB’s interventions.
Quality education requires a results-based approach. Research has shown that effective teaching and school leadership are critical factors in improving learning outcomes. Therefore, strengthening the professional development of teachers (both pre-service and in-service) and fostering school leadership are at the core of VVOB’s work.
VVOB is a technical partner of ministries of Education and local education authorities in achieving the targets set out in their own education policies. Developing the capacity of these duty bearers and providing technical assistance are the main instruments of VVOB’s interventions to achieve SDG4.
VVOB forges partnerships with and between civil society organisations and the private sector to ensure and improve the quality of its interventions further.
VVOB invests in all learners. Direct beneficiaries are (pre-service and in-service) teacher trainers and government officials. Indirect beneficiaries are teachers and school leaders.
