About
Secretaria Regional do Mar e das Pescas (SRMP)
The Azores sea constitutes a significant part of the country's enormous maritime jurisdiction area. For the Azores, the sea has always been of great importance, namely in its development, conditioning the economy, marking its own identity.
Given the relevance of the Sea to the Azores, the Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries, a department of the XIII Regional Government, was created in order to provide a more adequate response in terms of the pursuit of the Region's interests in the sea and fisheries sectors and inspection of fisheries.
The SRMP exercises competence in the definition and implementation of regional policy on oceanography, fisheries and aquaculture, enhancement and preservation of the marine environment, as well as other matters related to the sea, including the planning and management of the coastline and marine areas protected areas and maritime spatial planning.
Based on a global vision of promoting a healthy ocean, through a sustainable blue economy, the regional strategy for the Azores Sea is particularly relevant, as well as the Azores Maritime Spatial Planning Plan, as structuring elements to develop and enhance the economy of the sea.
