HEC - Higher Education Commission (formerly the Tertiary Education Commission)

Higher education in Mauritius includes colleges, universities and other technical institutions. Public university education has been free to students since 2019.

The sector is managed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) which has the responsibility for allocating public funds, and fostering, planning and coordinating the development of post-secondary education and training. Formerly the Tertiary Education Commission, in 2020 it was reformed into the HEC and a separate Quality Assurance Authority (QAA) for auditing of qualifications.

The Tertiary Education Commission has ceased its operations with effect from 16 January 2020. Its powers and functions have passed to the two new statutory bodies: the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Quality Assurance Authority (QAA). The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is the Regulatory Body for tertiary education. Until further notice, both statutory bodies are sharing the same physical address as the former TEC, that is 4th floor, HEC (ex-TEC) Building, Reduit 80835.
