Fundação Maria Rosa de Mello e Faro Carvalho Borges da Gama e Filhos

Fernando Maria Carvalho Borges de Frias was born on May 28, 1924, in the parish of Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos, district of Porto. Son of Roberto Maximiano da Costa Frias and Maria Rosa de Mello and Faro Carvalho Borges de Frias, he married Elvira Maria Vieira Tinoco de Frias in December 1976.

He completed secondary education in the city of Porto and graduated in Economic and Financial Sciences from the University of Lisbon, having worked for most of his life at Banco Fonsecas & Burnay. Dedicated to his profession, Fernando Frias also showed a willingness to maintain links with his agricultural heritage. Theater, cinema and history were prominent among his cultural interests. He always cultivated affective values, being very dedicated to his parents and brothers – António Carvalho Borges de Frias and José Carvalho Borges de Frias.

Due to the fact that he left no descendants, Fernando Frias had for many years revealed his intention to leave his assets to a foundation that would perpetuate the name of his mother and brothers, and whose object was the development of viticulture in the Douro, as well as of social solidarity and beneficence.
Having not instituted the Foundation while still alive, however, he bequeathed this task to his cousin Carlos Maria Tavares da Cunha Coutinho, to whom he entrusts the role of executor and head of the inheritance and is in charge of drawing up the Foundation's statutes with the Maria Rosa de Mello and Faro Carvalho Borges da Gama & Filhos .
