About
The Association Djiboutienne pour l'Equilibre et la Promotion de la Famille (ADEPF) was established in 1994. It works closely with the Ministry for the Promotion of the Women, the Ministry of Health, and the State Secretariat of Youth. ADEPF does not have clinics: its work focuses on awareness creation, advocacy and counselling. Recent work includes advisory sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues for professionals. The Member Association has a successful record in combating female genital mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence. Evidence shows that prevalence of the female genital mutilations is declining in Djibouti. ADEPF has actively contributed to this decline by raising awareness through TV, radio programmes and the production of educational leaflets, brochures. ADEPF has trained women, religious leaders and midwives on the harmful consequences of this practice and has led advocacy efforts with parliamentarians.ADEPF is involved in awareness-raising among young people with regard to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/ AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortion. In 2010, ADEPF opened a youth-friendly centre in the town of Ras-Dika for the professional delivery of appropriate information to young people, both face-to-face and via an extensive library of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) materials.
