About

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, Inc., was created in 1979 through the joint efforts of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta Council of Younger Lawyers, and the Gate City Bar Association. AVLF is the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Greater Atlanta. For over 35 years, they have promoted access to justice by inspiring volunteer attorneys to provide high-quality education, advocacy, and representation at no charge to low-income families with basic civil legal needs at critical times in their lives. The programs include services for domestic violence survivors, landlord/tenant disputes, evictions, unpaid wages, and probate issues.

The founders understood that private attorneys must play a central role in promoting access to the civil legal system for people who cannot afford legal representation. The 35-year history has proven that equal access provides direct social and economic benefits to low-income families and their communities and advances notions of justice and fair play.

For a poor person walking into court, the assistance of a volunteer lawyer can prevent homelessness, the disruption of employment and education, secure wages desperately needed to survive, provide legal protection to victims of violence, and protect children from abuse and neglect.

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation develops and coordinates programs that provide legal representation, education and advocacy for at-risk, low income individuals by tapping the enthusiasm and commitment of volunteer legal professionals to address the unmet civil legal needs in the Atlanta legal community.
