GKV-Spitzenverband

Since July 1, 2008, the "Spitzenverband Bund der Krankenkassen" ( GKV -Spitzenverband), which was set up on the basis of the GKV Competition Strengthening Act, has taken over the statutory tasks of the previously existing seven central associations of health insurance companies .

It is thus the sole statutory health insurance association ( GKV ) at federal level and regulates in particular the framework conditions for competition in terms of quality and cost-effectiveness of care. The contracts concluded by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds and its other decisions apply to its member funds, the state associations of health insurance companies and the insured.

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds supports the health insurance companies and their state associations in fulfilling their tasks and protecting their interests. For example, he helps with the development and standardization of electronic data exchange within the GKV .

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds also plays a special role in determining the contributions of voluntary members: since the introduction of the health fund, the assessment of contributions for voluntary members is no longer regulated by the individual health insurance companies through their statutes, but rather uniformly by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds. In connection with the introduction of the health fund, it was necessary to create regulations covering all types of insurance and to ensure a uniform assessment of contributions for voluntary members.
The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds is a corporation under public law and is subject to the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health. Its board of directors consists of insured and employer representatives of the general local health insurance funds, the substitute health insurance funds, the company health insurance funds, the guild health insurance funds, the German pension insurance Knappschaft-Bahn-See and the social insurance for agriculture, forestry and horticulture.
