The GEB was founded in 1989 under the name "Romanisches Büro" by students and teachers at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 2005 the name was changed to the current name. The aim of the founding members of the association was to give people the opportunity to get to know each other personally across borders, to break down prejudices and to work together on European unity.

The Society for European Education is an association of friends and supporters of the European idea. Members are committed individuals as well as companies, public institutions and NGOs.
