About
Serve Afghanistan was initially established in 1972 in response to a famine in Ghor Province, Afghanistan. It disbanded after one and a half years, when the immediate needs were met.
Serve Afghanistan was re-established in 1980, originally working with Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Since the early 1990s, after the Soviet occupation had ended, Serve Afghanistan returned to Afghanistan and it started a school for the deaf (now successfully handed over to the Afghan Government).
It was during this time that Serve Afghanistan also began projects for people with disabilities, community development, literacy, civil engineering and environment.
Serve Afghanistan is currently working in 6 projects in 6 main sectors which are Inclusive Education for disabled children, Livelihood, Mother & Child Health & Nutrition, Mother Tongue Literacy, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Disaster Management.
Serve Afghanistan’s vision is to create an inclusive environment for the marginalised in Afghanistan.
Serve Afghanistan’s purpose is to bring hope to the peoples of Afghanistan, through resourcing, empowerment and advocacy.
Serve Afghanistan has projects in the Central, Eastern and Southern regions of Afghanistan, working mainly on Inclusive Education, livelihood, Maternal & Child Health and Nutrition, WASH, Mother Tongue Literacy and Disaster Management.
Serve Afghanistan operates solely in Afghanistan under a Governance Board. It works in its core capacities with the Executive Director and Afghan managers in three regions. Expatriate Technical Advisors support the national managers. The total number of direct and indirect beneficiaries in 2021 is projected to be approximately 140,000 people.
