Established in 1996, the Consorzio Mediterraneo sca rl associates 15 cooperatives located throughout the country and a national coordination centre. The Consortium constitutes the technical-scientific reference structure for Lega Pesca – National Association of Fishing Cooperatives adhering to Lega Coop-National League of Cooperatives and Mutuals – of which it is a member. Mediterraneo operates directly or through its associates to contribute to the expansion and dissemination of knowledge and to the deepening of the main problems in the fish sector with particular reference to the aspects of a biological, ecological, technological, economic and educational nature with the aim of promoting the development and enhancement of fishing, the ichthyic economy, aquaculture and the protection of the coastal strip in Italy. To this end, it promotes, coordinates and implements study and research projects in Italy and abroad, exploiting the different skills and synergies developed among the associated researchers. The central structure in Rome makes use of 6 collaborators coordinated by the director and the president. The functions of the national operational headquarters are the identification, development and promotion of projects, the coordination of activities between the executing subjects and the general organization of the Consortium. The peripheral structures, present in most of the Italian coastal regions, have a total of over 120 members and 40 employees, and boast many years of experience in the various sectors in which Mediterraneo operates and carry out the various activities on the territory, both with direct commissions and through the central structure, using their own means. Particularly important is the technical-scientific support activity aimed at the cooperatives belonging to Lega Pesca, which operate in the various sectors of the fish economy: fishing, aquaculture, processing, marketing, financial activities. The support activity integrates with that of study, research, monitoring, dissemination, professional training and qualification aimed at operators in the sector with the aim of promoting both the responsible exploitation of marine biological resources and the enhancement of the quality of fishery products. financial activities. The support activity integrates with that of study, research, monitoring, dissemination, professional training and qualification aimed at operators in the sector with the aim of promoting both the responsible exploitation of marine biological resources and the enhancement of the quality of fishery products. financial activities. The support activity integrates with that of study, research, monitoring, dissemination, professional training and qualification aimed at operators in the sector with the aim of promoting both the responsible exploitation of marine biological resources and the enhancement of the quality of fishery products.

The Consorzio Mediterraneo s.c.a r.l. (Mediterranean Consortium), founded in 1996, is the technical and scientific structure of the Lega Pesca (Fishing Association) and combines 15 of the most qualified companies for co-operative research. It is formed by a co-ordinating head office in Rome and by subsidiary offices and laboratories situated at the associated cooperatives for research that are present throughout the Italian territory (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Latium, Apulia, Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily).Registered at the National Registry for Research and credited at the Ministry for Agricultural Policies, the consortium collaborates with different universities, with ICRAM (Institute for Research Applied to Sea resources), CNR (the Italian National Centre for Research), FAO, ENEA (the Italian National Body for Energy and Environment), the Ministry for Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union. It is a partner of UNIMAR, the unitary research consortium of the fishing Associations, that created a National technical and biological observatory on fishing and aquaculture within the measures foreseen by the financial instrument for fishing orientation (SFOP). The Consorzio operates, directly or through its partners, throughout the country, promoting studies and researches aiming at contributing to the knowledge and in-depth study of problems connected with the fishing sector, with particular emphasis on those of biological, ecological, technological, economical and training nature in order to promote the development and optimisation of fishing, fishing economy, aquaculture and coastline in Italy. Of a particular relevance is the activity of technical and scientific support aimed at the co-operatives associated to the Lega Pesca (Fishing Association), that operate in the different compartments of the fishing economy: fishing, aquaculture, transformation, marketing. Furthermore, the consortium carries out studies and researches aimed at the development of biotechnologies, the estimation of the environmental impact related to the sea environment, the eco-compatible technological innovation, to the environmental audit for the definition of productive management practises compatible with the environment, the definition of quality standards for fishing products, the integrated management plans of the coastline, the development plans for the management of protected sea areas and scientific dissemination.
