About

It is an autonomous research institute within UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Initially, this institution was founded on April 1 1995 with the aim of inviting a number of scholars from various disciplines and backgrounds to carry out several research activities, studies, training and dissemination of information, especially about Indonesian Islam and Southeast Asian Islam in general. Currently, PPIM is a university-based strategic research institution in Indonesia with experience in the field of religious studies and social issues with publications and a wide network, both at home and abroad.

The birth of PPIM and the enthusiasm it brought were a response to academic discourse which, until the late 1980s and early 1990s, still considered Islam in Indonesia a "marginal" issue. Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia is given less attention because it is considered not an important part or even apart from mainstream Islam as it develops in Arabia, North Africa, Iran and even sub-continent countries. Syncretic Southeast Asian Islam, as Clifford Geertz suggests, is considered “not true Islam”. This was also exacerbated by the misunderstanding of some of the international community at that time about Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia due to various factors. For example, first, there is a lack of in-depth research on the diversity of Islam in Indonesia by Indonesian Muslim scholars themselves who certainly understand more about Islam in their region. Second, it is possible that many studies have been carried out, but the results of these studies are not widely published and are not communicated to the international world.
